MANILA, Philippines — Five Filipino seafarers are still missing after abandoning their burning ship off the waters of Hawaii two weeks ago, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.

Panamanian-flagged MV Sincerity Ace was on its way to Hawaii from Japan carrying 3,500 brand new vehicles when the cargo vessel caught fire on New Year's Eve some 1,800 nautical miles northwest of Oahu.

The five missing are among the 21 Filipino crew members who abandoned the ship. Rescue operations are still ongoing for the five missing Filipino crew members.

"The DFA Office of Migrant Workers Affairs has been informed by the ship’s manning agency that a tugboat and another vessel had been sent to the area to locate the five," the DFA said in a statement.

The 16 other seafarers were rescued by the United States Coast Guard and other passing merchant ships.

Most of the survivors have since returned to the Philippines, according to the DFA. — Patricia Lourdes Viray
