PAGASA: LPA off Mindanao unlikely to become tropical cyclone before Christmas
MANILA, Philippines — A low pressure area east of Mindanao has a slim chance of developing into a tropical cyclone few days before Christmas, state weather bureau PAGASA said Wednesday.
The LPA was last spotted 1,000 kilometers east of Mindanao.
“It may enter the Philippine area of responsibility in the next 24 hours but it has a low chance of becoming a tropical cyclone,” PAGASA weather forecaster Lorie Dela Cruz said in an interview on DZMM.
But the trough or the extension of the weather will still affect Mindanao, bringing cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms.
Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon or amihan is affecting Luzon and some parts of Visayas.
PAGASA also raised gale warning over the northern and eastern seaboards of northern Luzon and eastern seaboard of central Luzon, southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao due to the surge of northeast monsoon.
During last year’s holidays, at least 300 were killed when back-to-back storms Urduja and Vinta pummelled Visayas and Mindanao, respectively. — Gaea Katreena Cabico
