MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon Paeng (international name Trami) intensified yesterday as it moved slowly over the Philippine Sea, threatening to bring rains over landslide-hit Northern Luzon on Friday.

As of 3 p.m. yesterday, the eye of Paeng was spotted at 715 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

PAGASA said Paeng, which was expected to remain almost stationary over the sea, packed winds of 200 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 240 kph.

PAGASA weather specialist Loriedin dela Cruz said light to moderate rains are expected over Northern Luzon on Friday.

Residents of Northern Luzon have been advised to brace for more landslides due to Paeng.

Northern Luzon is still reeling from the devastation brought by Typhoon Ompong (Mangkhut) two weeks ago.

The typhoon triggered landslides that left at least 78 people dead.

Dela Cruz said the Philippines is not expected to be reached by Paeng’s strong winds and heavy rains as the typhoon veered northward away from the country.
