MANILA, Philippines — A low-pressure area will continue to dump rains over Metro Manila and other parts of the country today, the state weather bureau said.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) spotted the weather system at 50 kilometers northeast of Iloilo City, Iloilo as of 3 p.m. yesterday.

PAGASA said moderate to occasional heavy rains with strong winds will prevail over Metro Manila, Bicol region, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Visayas, Caraga, Northern Mindanao and Zamboanga peninsula.

The rest of the country will have isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms.

Obet Badrina, PAGASA weather specialist, said the low-pressure area may develop into a tropical depression once over the West Philippine Sea.

Badrina likened the weather disturbance to Tropical Depression Nando, which developed from a low-pressure area at 2 p.m. last Saturday and exited the country at 9 p.m. of the same day.

The low-pressure area was crossing the Visayas yesterday and was expected to exit landmass via Mindoro.

Badrina said improved weather condition is expected over Metro Manla by Wednesday or Thursday.

No other weather disturbance is affecting the country.

A total of 14 tropical cyclones have visited the Philippines so far this year, four of which entered this month.
