MANILA, Philippines — Gino Padilla's hit song "Closer You and I" has been covered by fellow Filipino singer Adie, giving the track some fresh new love.

The original song initially gained popularity as the accompanying track to toothpaste commercial back in 1992.

The same toothpaste brand put a new spin on the idea with Spongecola turning the ballad into a rock song, with former love team Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson fronting a 2009 advertisment doubling as a music video.

Over 30 years since that iconic commerical, Adie becomes the latest artist to cover Padilla's song for yet another music video, this time starring the DonBelle love team of Donny Pangilinan and Belle Mariano.

Directed by Antoinette Jadaone, the video sees two individuals sharing an attraction for one another after constant trips up and down an elevator.

Padilla considered it a great privilege and honor to have taken part in the commerical many years ago, noting people continue to associate "Closer You and I" with his name.

"The new version sounds great, and I gotta congratulate Adie for doing such a wonderful job because he was able to inject his own style and represent his current generation," Padilla also said, praising Adie.

The singer also recalled with heartfelt laughter good memories of recording the original advertisment, "They made me feel special, so special that when I was recording this song in the booth they were inside the recording studio. We had a great time."

He additionally extended his gratitude to Louie Ocampo and Gina Tabuena-Godinez for the music and lyrics of "Closer You and I," as well as their timeless contribution to Philippine music.

"Kilig back then and now — it's an emotion. It's the same; it's never going to change," Padilla ended. "It's like love. If you have love, if you have that positive feeling or state of mind and heart, it's only going to bring you good things."
