Kendrick Lamar & Drake top Grammy 2019 nominations

SOUNDS FAMILIAR - Baby A. Gil - The Philippine Star

I am not at all surprised that hip-hop and rap recordings topped the 2019 Grammy Awards nominations.  So now Kendrick Lamar and Drake would be the guys to beat on music’s biggest night which will be held at the CBS Staples Center on Feb. 10.

What I am really surprised about is that Taylor Swift’s album reputation was nominated in only one category Best Pop Vocal Album. Well, times indeed are a-changing and even music titans, like Swifty are subject to the vagaries of changing trends. I do not think she will win the Grammy next year. Sad but she already has a lot of those trophies anyway. Still, I am not counting her out yet. This girl is also a shrewd marketing genius so I am already curious about what she will do after this snub.

I am happy about Bradley Cooper’s nomination for Shallow, his duet with Lady Gaga from the movie A Star Is Born (ASIB). It looks like, he might even get a Grammy ahead of the Oscar he has been chasing these past years. And for Record of the Year at that. Oh yes, Bradley fans, please don’t feel bad that the ASIB album is not among the nominees. It was released only late last October and that is too late for the Grammys’ Sept. 30 annual cut-off. So you can count on that soundtrack being in the running next year.

And a big congratulations to our own Lea Salonga. As part of the cast of the revival of the musical, Once On This Island, whose soundtrack is nominated for Best Musical Theater Album, she is now a Grammy nominee. And maybe a Grammy winner soon. Now, I wonder why didn’t Lea get a Grammy for Miss Saigon?
