MANILA, Philippines — Kapuso star Maine Mendoza apologized for her alleged insensitive behavior during the “Eat Bulaga” segment “Sugod Bahay.”

A fan tweeted Maine and said, “Bakit ganon idol? Ginawa mong biro ‘yung pinagdadaanan in ate?” Maine then replied to the fan, saying that she did not know what the contestant was going through.

“Nakikiramay po kami kay ate. Hindi po namin alam nung una na ganun pala ang pinagdadaanan niya bilang hindi po namin naintindihan ‘yung una niyang sinabi,” the “Dubmash Queen” replied.

The incident happened in Calumpit, Bulacan, where Maine, together with co-hosts Polo Ballesteros and Jose Manalo, interviewed a winner of the “Sugod Bahay” segment.

The winner turned emotional upon learning that she won the segment as Jose asked “Leny, umiiyak ka ka kaagad, e. Natutuwa ka kaya ka umiiyak.” The contestant then replied: “Opo. Sobra pong tuwa dahil mapapalibing ko na ang anak ko. Makakabayad na po sa funeraria.”

Joey de Leon, who is in the studio, asked Maine to repeat what the winner said, and Maine mimicked the emotional sobbing of the winner.

According to the winning contestant, her 16-year-old son died of kidney complications.

Maine was bashed in different social media sites for reportedly making fun of the grieving mother.

A netizen tweeted: “I find this part so insensitive knowing that the sugod bahay winner’s son/daughter(not sure) just recently died and they still continue this sick joke of replicating her emotions on what she felt during that moment. You guys are so inconsiderate. @mainedcm @AngPoetNyo #JoseManalo”
