UP Law Class of 1985 to honor its professors

MANILA, Philippines - The legendary professors of Mal- colm Hall are certainly in for a “grand manner” of a treat. The UP College of Law Class of 1985, in cooperation with UP Law Dean Danilo Concep- cion, the UP College of Law admin- istration, the UP Law Center and the UP Law Student Government, is holding a formal gathering to salute their professors during their stint at the College in the ’80s. The event promises to be a unique celebration of the life and times of the revered professors and their former students from nearly three decades ago. The first of its kind in the 102-year history, the UP Law Class of 1985 Testimonial for its Professors will be held tomor- row, March 4, 4 p.m. at the Malcolm Theater, College of Law, UP Diliman, Quezon City.

The professors to be honored during the event are Dean Pacifico Agabin, Dean Froilan Bacungan, Dean Bartolome Carale, Dean Salva- dor Carlota, Dean Merlin Magallona, Justice Leonardo Quisumbing, Justice Antonio Carpio, Justice Flerida Ruth Romero, Justice Vicente Mendoza, Professors Ruben Balane, Arturo Balbastro, Myrna Feliciano, Carmelo Sison, Arturo de Castro, Eduardo Lab- itag, Alfredo Tadiar, Crispino Reyes, Jose Laureta and Silverio Tayao.

The UP College of Law Class of 1985 is chaired by former National Telecommunication Commission (NTC) Commisioner Pope Solis and includes government officials such as deputy executive secretary Teo- filo Pilando, Department of Educa- tion Undersecretary Alberto Muyot, Ambassador to Israel Gene Calonge, Member of the Claims Board of the Commission of Human Rights Jake Mejia, member of the Bangsa Moro Peace Process Mehol Sadain, secretary-general of the House of Representatives Marilyn Barua-Yap, deputy secretary-general of the House of Representatives Arlene Dada, RTC judges Divinagracia Bustos- Ongkeko, Edgar Santos, Edgardo Diaz de Rivera and Louie Acosta, assistant solicitors-general Renan Ramos, Vida San Vicente and Anna Solomon, and deputy government corporate counsel Alda Reyes.

Other members of the class who served in government in the past are former Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Ed de Mesa, former solicitor general Jose Anselmo Cadiz, former Congressmen Ruy Elias Lopez, Jing Paras and Ome Candazo, former member of the Judicial and Bar Coun- cil J Castro, former Bureau of Im- migration and Deportation assistant commissioner Jun

Subido, former MWSS chairman Jojo Allado, for- mer RTC judge Bayani Ilano and former press secretary Michael Toledo, who, together with lawyer Linda Jimeno, will be emcee- ing the Testimonial.

The grand event is spearheaded by lawyer Dot Ramos Balasbas-Gancayco together with the UP Law Class ‘85 Core Group members, namely lawyers Rose Amatong-Buendia, Melva Evange- lista-Valdez, Tips San Juan, Jun Men- doza and Thelma Aglahi-Cesista.

The grand reunion presents itself as the perfect opportunity for the UP Law Class of 1985 and other UP Law Batches, and a new generation of law students to show their gratitude and appreciation to their irreplaceable mentors whose legacies in the aca- deme and legal practice greatly con- tributed to the prestige and history of the premier law school in the country.
