How Cory broke the 62-year Miss World jinx

Danny Vibas - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Megan Young is the Philippines’ first-ever Miss World titlist in that beauty pageant’s 63-year-old history. The Philippines has produced two Misses Universe (Gloria Diaz in 1969 and Margie Moran in 1974) and four Misses International (Gemma Cruz, Aurora Pijuan, Melanie Marquez and Lara Quigaman).

Cory Quirino took over the Philippine franchise of that elusive global beauty title which is almost as fabled as the Miss Universe. Having driven us close to the title through Gwendoline Ruais’ spunky beauty and personality, why shouldn’t we expect the graciously enlightened and daring Cory to lead us to a Filipina who has the bearing and beauty perfect for the elusive Miss World title?

Cory dared to equip her Miss World candidate with a “secret weapon” when she sent her out to Bali, Indonesia, to compete with other beauties: A winner’s consciousness powered by a mantra.

It was a two-sentence-mantra courtesy of life coach George Sison whom Cory chose to psyche up Megan for the global competition. George and Cory have been friends for decades and the latter is aware of the former’s work about building up people’s consciousness to achieve their life’s desires, including winning in competitions. George does it by sharing spiritual and mental laws and encouraging people to behave and act in ways that resonate with their desires (or dreams and goals) — like he did with Rene Novelles who won the grand prize in the amateur division of the 1984 Metro Pop Fest with his entry, A Smile in Your Heart interpreted by Jam Morales. George also primed up Juan Rodrigo when he won Best Supporting Actor in the 1983 FAMAS Awards.

“Cory called me on the eve of Megan’s departure for Bali, so there was no time for Megan and I to meet in person. Hence, the next best thing to do was for Megan and I to talk over the phone. Megan called me at 2:30 a.m. after a rehearsal for something,” recalled George.

Fortunately, Megan and George found each other fascinating even just over the phone, so they ended up talking for about two hours.

“I found her articulate, sweet, confident, positive and receptive, and, yes, well-bred. I had to know her, where she grew up and how she grew up. Also, I needed to know her date of birth (Feb. 27, 1990) what time she was born, and where (Alexandria, Virginia, USA),” revealed George who has developed his own practical astrology and biorhythmic system over the years as a highly spiritual life coach.

“Megan was on her fourth cycle when she won Miss World Philippines on Aug. 18. That cycle means a person is inclined to be physically weak and susceptible to ailments. It is meant to be a period of rest and reduced strenuous physical activities. But her positive, well-meaning attitude enabled her to overcome what should have been a low period,” shared George about her “reading” of the young beauty queen.

George explained that there are seven cycles in his astrological-biorhythmic system, with each cycle lasting for 52 days. The first cycle begins from one’s birthday.

“The cycles indicate tendencies, they are not definitive predictions of what will happen to you during each period. What actually happens to you during each cycle depends entirely on your consciousness. For instance, if you have been wallowing in negative, fault-finding, damning thoughts at the beginning of your fourth cycle and indulging in too many stressful physical activities, you may find yourself sick in the middle or towards the end of that period.”

Megan was on her fifth cycle when she competed in Bali.

“It’s basically a winning season if your consciousness is ripe for it — meaning, you’ve done a lot of good to others without demanding anything in return, minimized your complaints and other grumblings, forgave all real and imagined wrongs people have done to you, sincerely prayed for others for their dreams to come true, including those whom you believe have done you wrong,” George itemized.

George did not reveal to Megan that she was on her winning cycle but instead stressed the need for her to remain confident, positive, well-meaning and energetic. To keep her self on the right footing and on the right mindset all the time, he gave Megan a two-sentence mantra (which is better known these days as “affirmation”). The second sentence in the mantra was: “I am Miss World 2013.”

When George asked Megan to repeat the mantra, “she did without hesitation, without stuttering — which means her consciousness fully accepted her being Miss World 2013 even before she flew to Bali!”

George instructed her to start quietly reciting the mantra as soon as she stepped in Bali. But he also made it clear to Megan: “When you get to Bali, you may find out that there are contestants prettier and more personable than you are. It’s okay for you to appreciate them, to wish them well, to get along well with them — but you have to keep in mind that you are Miss World 2013. Walk and smile as one every time you have to move...”

George further instructed Megan over the phone to get a pocket-size photo of her as Miss World Philippines, replace her crown and sash on the pic with those of Miss World 2012 (with the year removed) — and to keep the photo in her bag so she can look at it as often as she can.

He also instructed Megan not to reveal to anyone her mantra, not to show anyone her artwork photo wearing the Miss World crown and sash — except to Cory. Finally, Cory sent two of George’s best-selling books, A Miracle Awaits You and I Am A Winner. And sure enough a miracle happened and we got a winner.

And that’s how Cory broke the 62-year jinx in the Miss World.
