PhilPop enriches Filipino music

MANILA, Philippines - Filipino music is a genuine expression of Filipinos not only as a unified group, but also as unique individuals. The PhilPop MusicFest Foundation, Inc. is a an advocate of this notion, which is it established the Philippine Popular Music Festival (PhilPOP) early this year. Now, it is already setting the stage for 2013.

PhilPOP is a search for Filipino musical composers, whether residing here or abroad, who can showcase musical ingenuity and passion. Songwriters can start sending their entries by Jan. 1 till end of February through www.philpop.com.ph.

The PhilPOP competition has generated excitement since it kicked off earlier this year because of Filipinos’ love for music. The spotlight being given to songwriters now is an undertaking that is long-overdue.

The PhilPOP Foundation sees Filipino music as a cultural treasure and an indication of national identity.

Many foreign influences have been integrated in the local music scene. Filipinos are not only listening to international music, but also composing music reminiscent of what they hear but still putting in their own unique flavor. While it is good that the local musical caliber is developing through external influences, there is still an obligation to come up with original materials.

The foundation is again giving Filipinos the opportunity to become their own inspiration. Then, it can be cascaded to future generations, which in turn can make their own music.

The foundation seeks to enrich original Pilipino music (OPM) and educate the now and future generations on its uniqueness and importance. It also preserves the vanishing musical gems and empowers Filipino songwriters whose music can inspire and motivate a nation.

Better things are in store for PhilPOP, the foundation and the Filipino music industry. Apart from the songwriting competition, the Philpop also embarked on a nationwide tour teaching songwriting and music appreciation through the Songwriting with the Maestro which has reached thousands of students from several parts of the country.

PhilPOP is presented by Maynilad, Smart, Meralco, PLDT, Resorts World Manila, TV5, Metro Pacific Investments Corp., NLEX, PICC, Sun Cellular, First Pacific Leadership Academy, KBP and Philex.
