Anna scores with the simple love song

SOUNDS FAMILIAR - Baby A. Gil -
Anna Fegi is a powerhouse performer who can literally stun audiences with her vocal prowess. But irony of ironies, she scores her biggest hit with a simple love song that requires minimal vocal histrionics. It again proved that being heartbreakingly sweet and sincere can be more potent when you have the right song. Anna’s new hit is Saan Ka Na Kaya Ngayon. It is a composition by the Hot Dog brothers Dennis and Rene Garcia and produced by Vic Valenciano. It is included in Anna’s new album Straight Ahead. It is a song that instantly touched the hearts of listeners and will surely become one of those that gets recorded again and again over the years.

Everybody has had his or heart broken at least once and they have all had occasion to ask the question "Saan ka na kaya ngayon?" and experience the emotions expressed in the song. "Masaya ka ba sa piling niya/sa bawat halik ba’y mas kinikilig ka/isa pang tanong na medyo presko/kahit minsan ba’y nasa isip mo ako/Sino na kayang kasama mo/ mas magaling ba siyang maglambing sayo/nais kong malaman/kahit napakasakit para sa akin ‘to/wala na bang pag-asa sa iyo/nagtatanong lang naman ako/saan ka na kaya ngayon/mahal pa rin kita…"

The recording of Saan Ka Na Kaya Ngayon is made all the more remarkable by the fact that Anna is a Cebuana who still has to get over her Visayan accent. Truth to tell, the album Straight Ahead is a major accomplishment on her part because it has eight Tagalog songs and only two in English. These are What Good is That Without You? and the Eydie Gorme hit from the ’70s It Takes Too Long (To Learn to Live Alone). The song Even If, a duet with former South Border soloist Luke Mijares and another highlight of the album, uses a mix of English and Filipino lyrics. Doing this album must have been a difficult job for Anna but she did it with flying colors and even came up with a hit song she will always be identified with.

Anna joined the famous group Smokey Mountain during its later years. She went solo four years ago and has since then done theater, Rent, Dreamgirls and others, recorded two albums Every Step of the Way and Straight Ahead, appeared on television and performed in lots and lots of shows here and abroad.

Reality Check
Reality check. Horrors! It is now only 54 days to Christmas and 61 days to the New Year. That means it will soon be 2004! And what has Filipino music got to show for it? A pathetic lot! Chinese pop, Spagheti and Otso-otso gyrating with belly dancers and freaks in a feria setting. There are a few bright lights so let us just hope and pray that we will get more of them next year.

The hits of the moment from local talents are the following: Forever’s Not Enough the second hit single by Star for a Night champ Sarah Geronimo; Mr. Suave by Parokya ni Edgar; Tayo’y Mag-Otso-Otso by comedian Bayani Agbayani; Saan Ka Na Kaya Ngayon by Anna Fegi; Hinahanap-hanap Kita by Regine Velasquez; Broken Vow by Sarah Geronimo and Mark Bautista; Hanggang Ngayon by Martin Nievera; Moonlight in Paris by Paolo Santos; Nasaan by Nyoy Volante; and Tell Me, a duet by Regine Velasquez and Ariel Rivera.
