New team, new milestone for PBA’s ageless ‘Spiderman’ Arwind Santos

CEBU, Philippines —  Arwind Santos reached another milestone in his storied career in just his second game with his new team.

Donning the NorthPort Batang Pier uniform this time, the league’s revered “Spiderman” became the seventh player in league history to pile up least 900 blocks.

Santos, 40, is the only active player in the top 10 of the PBA all-time  block leaders, ranking behind legendary figures Ramon Fernandez (1,853), Philip Cezar (1370), Benjie Paras (1333), Jerry Codinera (1221), Marlou Aquino (1131), and Abet Guidaben (922).

In that momentous evening, the pride of Angeles City, Pampanga dropped 20 points and seven rebounds in a stellar performance, albeit in a losing effort for NorthPort via a 115-120 overtime thriller to the NLEX Road Warriors in the PBA Governor’s Cup last Friday night at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasay City.

In days leading to the season-ending Governor’s Cup, Santos landed in NorthPort after a stunning one-on-one trade that sent Vic Manuel to the San Miguel Beermen.

Santos saw action with the Beermen in the last 12 seasons where he formed a vaunted “Death 5” with June Mar Fajardo, Chris Ross, Alex Cabagnot, and Marcio Lassiter that propelled the San Miguel franchise to a historic PBA Philippine Cup five-peat until 2019.

In all, Santos won nine PBA championships with San Miguel since jumping over from Burger King in 2009. In the course of his illustrious caree, he bagged the 2013 MVP award plus a pair of Finals MVP trophies and two Best Player of the Conference accolades. — EBV
