Alta Vista defends Jungolf's title

CEBU, Philippines - Host Alta Vista Golf and Country Club successfully defended the club title in the 7th Junior Golf Challenge Tournament, which ended yesterday.

The host club amassed a total of 158 points to run away with the crown. A far second was Del Monte Golf Club with 77 followed by Cebu Country Club with 70.

Gio Gandionco of the host team also bagged the class A (15-17 years old) title in a duel that went down the wire. Gandionco fired a three-day total of 224 strokes on rounds of 77, 73 and 74. 

First runner-up was CCC’s Lloy Jefferson Go with 226 (83-69-74) while second runner-up was Justin Quiban of Phil. Navy with 229 (74-80-75).

Go won the overall lowest gross title based on the scores made on the last two days of the tournament. He had a total of one-over-par 143 strokes in the last two days.

The course was shortened to par-70 with the 9th and 18th holes converted into par-4s.

The girls’ division crown for class A went to Del Monte’s Apple Fudolin with 244 strokes (82-85-77). Runner-up honors went to Alta Vista’s Emy Lou Tan with 261 (89-83-89).

CCC’s Gen Nagai topped the boys’ division of class B (13-14) with 227 strokes on rounds of 74, 74, and 79.

First runner-up was Del Monte’s Jelbert Gamolo with 233 (79-75-79) followed by Alta Vista’s John Philip Hernandez with 245 (82-84-79).

The girls’ title went to Alta Vista’s Ericka Lim with 246 (82-82-82). Runner-up honors went to Pamela Mariano of Del Monte with 252 (85-85-82).

Alta Vista’s Wei Wei Gao ruled the boy’s division of class C (11-12) with a two-day total of 148 strokes off rounds of 76 and 72. First runner-up was Kristoffer Arevalo of Camp Aguinaldo also with 148 on rounds of 75 and 73. The tie was broken based on who had a better score on the last nine holes where Gao had 36 against the 37 of Arevalo.

Second runner-up was Del Monte’s Jets Sajulga with 168 (80-88).

For the distaff side, Del Monte’s Rainstar Roque won the title with 157 (77-80) while runner-up honors went to CCC’s Lois Kaye Go with 166 (78-88).

The class D (9-10) boys’ crown went to Christian Alido of Phil. Navy with 155 (74-81). First runner-up was Ateneo-JGFP’s Aidric Chan with 160 (79-81) and his teammate Marc Corrales was second runner-up with 161 (80-81).

The girls’ title went to Jona Angela Magcalayo of Phil. Navy with 169 (84-85) while runner-up honors went to Angela Mangana of Mactan Island Golf Club with 172 (92-80).

The class E (6-8) boys’ title went to Tatsuyoshi Ochiai of CCC with 91 (44-47) followed by teammate Joaquin Velez with 97 (44-53) and Alta Vista’s Matt Ian Bucao 131 (63-68).

The girls’ title went to Wei Fang Gao of Alta Vista with 93 (45-48) while runner-up honors went to teammate Alyssa Bejar with 122 (58-64).

The Sepcial Division (18-21) boy’s crown went to Alta Vista’s Edsel Lance Tan with 227 on rounds of 75, 81, and 71. Runner-up honors went to teammate Jon Jeffrey Carvajal with 298 (85-113-100).

The girls’ title went to Riviera’s Jan Soleil Punzalan with 272 (94-96-82).

Alta Vista’s team 1 composed of Gio Gandionco, Wei Wei Gao, Ericka Lim, and David Park bagged the team title.

Second place went to team 1 of Cebu Country Club composed of LJ Go, LK Go, Gen Nagai, and Pio Neri.

Third place was team 2 of Phil. Navy manned by Chang Yo Shen, Justin Quiban, RJ Tallud, and Jonas Christian Magcalayo. (FREEMAN)
