Red, Blue topple foes in Abbariao cagefest
CEBU, Philippines - Customs Police Boodie Monteño sank two crucial free throws to lift defending champion Red team to an 89-87 overtime victory over the Yellow squad in the opening match of the 2nd Maj. Alfonso C. Abbariao Memorial basketball tournament at the Benedicto College Gym along A.S. Fortuna Street in Mandaue City.
Monteño finished with 17 points capped by his charities that padded their lead to 89-84 with 58 seconds left in the extra period. They led all the way in overtime after a 75-all deadock in regulation.
Ronan Cañete topscored for the Red with 24 points even as Chinchin Paghasian also chipped in 17 markers.
Tata Laborte of the F. Llamas Youth Association (FYA) paced Yellow with 29 points, while Mamasao Capalan added 19 points. Bingo Matugas and Ferdie Laraga added 10 points apiece.
In the other game, Blue of District Collector Atty. Ronnie Silvestre defeated Green Team, 84-74.
Top center Rizzan Herbito led Blue with 21 points.
