PAF promotes sports

FULL POINT - Nimrod NL Quiones -

The Philippine Air Force through the 2nd Air Division and the Mactan Island Golf Club are reaching out to the civilians not using flying planes, but flying balls and flying kicks.

Maj. Gen. Nathaniel Legaspic, commander of the 2nd Air Division and chairman of the board of the MIGC said the other day that they are now actively promoting sports at the Mactan Benito Ebuen Air Base in Lapu-Lapu City.

General Legaspi said that they have started a taekwondo club with one of the manager of the new Imperial Palace Hotel and Resort as their instructor and have 47 students as of now.

He hopes to train more instructors so that they could reach out to more people and has even offered their services to the local government unit for a youth development program.

He also mentioned that the other facilities of the air base are also being opened to both military and civilians to play games like football and batted sports and has noted a good number of people who go there for such activities.

He said that this is being done with the MIGC, which is not only supporting golf, but also the other sporting activities.

By opening the door for more people to participate in sports, the good general wants to give the people an alterative to vices. I’m sure this is because of the fact that a healthy people can best help to build a healthy nation.

I won’t be surprised to one day bump into Retiree General Rodante Joya playing baseball or softball when he is not busy with his duties as general manager of the MIGC. If that happens, I’d love to join you hit some balls or play catch, sir. But of course, golf would still be my number one reason to go to Mactan.

The 1st Lapu-Lapu Fiesta Cup,l which is set next month, was launched the other day at MIGC.

Efren Belarmino, one of my favorite generals (being the General Manager of Plantation Bay), is the chairman of the event.

We have talked about this several months ago, and, in less than a month, the dream of Efren will be coming true.

The event features a format that makes it more fun. The first day will have a scramble format and the second day will be a one-ball alternate shot.  Entry fee is only P5,000 per team or two players.

Tita Vicky Moraza of the Cebu Country Club ladies chapter is inviting the lady golfers to take part in the “Golf for a Cure” tournament on the 26th at their home course.

This event is in line with the Pink October celebration, which promotes cancer awareness and also raises funds to help cure the Big C.

The ladies of the various golf clubs in Cebu are collaborating for this event. Although it is open exclusively to the fairer sex, the men are encouraged to give their share for the very noble cause of helping cancer patients.

Tournament fee is P1,200.
