CEBU, Philippines — Aside from local government efforts, the 2023 National Bicycle Day Awards in Iloilo City later this year also has a community recognition component in honor and celebrate individuals and initiatives that have made significant contributions to promoting active transportation and the cycling culture within their communities.

This component is expected to highlight the diverse range of people and efforts that play a pivotal role in advancing bicycling and its associated benefits.

There are several individual categories and initiatives that will also be awarded.

For the individual categories, there is a recognition at stake for a notable public official, competitive cyclist, commuter cyclist, leisure cyclist and storyteller.

The notable public official award recognizes a public figure who has actively supported and advocated for policies, infrastructure, or initiatives that enhance cycling accessibility, safety, and awareness in their jurisdiction.

The competitive cyclist, on the other hand, honors an accomplished athlete who has excelled in competitive cycling and served as an inspiration for aspiring cyclists and enthusiasts.

The commuter cyclist, on the other hand, is an acknowledgement to an individual who consistently utilizes a bicycle as their primary mode of transportation for commuting, reducing carbon footprint and promoting sustainable mobility while the leisure cyclist  celebrates an enthusiast who has shown dedication to recreational cycling and has encouraged others to explore the joys of leisurely bike rides as storyteller recognizers those who uses their platform to share inspiring narratives and raise awareness about the positive impact of cycling on individuals and communities.

For the initiative categories, there’s the Notable Bicycle-Related Corporate Initiative Award for the forward-thinking corporation that has implemented significant programs, products, or services geared toward enhancing cycling culture or infrastructure.

There’s also a bicycle-related MSME (micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises) Initiative for those that made noteworthy contributions to the bicycle industry, innovation, or sustainable practices and the advocacy Initiative to honor a grassroots or community-led campaign, organization, or initiative that has effectively promoted cycling as a mode of transportation, advocated for bicycle-friendly policies, or improved cycling infrastructure.

The nominee will get the chance to win a round-trip ticket to Iloilo to join the rest in celebrating the National Bike Day Awards and Recognition.

Nominations for all these categories are open until October 31, 2023. — (FREEMAN)
