Septuagenarian dies in Catmon town fire

CEBU, Philippines — A septuagenarian died in a fire that hit two houses Thursday night in Sitio Buyo, Barangay Binongkalan, Catmon.

Remedios Mellang, 74, a widow, did not make it out alive when a fire engulfed her house while she was sleeping at around 11:47 in the evening.

Firefighters placed the incident under first alarm when one house was totally burned and another one was partially gutted by fire.

Fire investigator, Fire Officer 1 Dharlene Mari, said they still have to determine the cause of fire after learning that the house has no electrical connection and the victim only used a kerosene lamp.

Mari pegged the damages at P20,000. —GMR (FREEMAN)
