CEBU, Philippines — Traditional public utility jeepneys (TPUJs) from the cities of Mandaue and Talisay will be allowed entry to Cebu City starting Monday next week provided that health protocols will be observed.

Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella made the announcement following a favorable recommendation from Councilor James Anthony Cuenco, head of the city’s Jeepney Task Force, and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB). An executive order on the matter will be issued today.

Labella said he agreed to allow the entry of TPUJs from Talisay and Mandaue because he felt the need not only of the commuters for more transportation but also of the drivers to earn a living.

“I also observed the need for additional transportation facilities for our commuters, especially that we have opened up so there will be more transportation facilities, provided they will comply with the minimum health requirements,” said Labella.

The mayor appealed to the TPUJ drivers to strictly observe the health protocols and the guidelines set by the different agencies.

“I will instruct also the CCTO (Cebu City Transportation Office) to really monitor very religiously compliance of the minimum health protocols and the guidelines set forth by LTFRB,” said Labella.

Labella warned that those who will be caught violating the rules and regulations will be banned entry to Cebu City.

“Of course, firstly, we will stop allowing them. We will cancel the opportunity for them to enter. And if there are violations, then sanctions will be imposed under our existing ordinances,” he said. —FPL (FREEMAN)
