CEBU, Philippines — The detainee who escaped from his escorts was killed in a police shootout during the manhunt operation Thursday night.

Earlier on the day, Alwin Cereño, jumped off from the police car on their way back to Mambaling Police Station after his medical examination.

At around 11:30 in the evening, in coordination with the other police stations, the Regional Intelligence Division (RID)-7 conducted a manhunt operation in F. Jaca St., Kinasang-an, Pardo, Cebu City against Cereño.

During the operation, the shoot ensued resulting to the death of Cereño.

Cereño was located through the information circulated that after he escaped, he transferred from one place to another.

"Nasamad sad naigo sad atong police nga si PSSG Chuby Caloscos, naigo sad siya sa iyang left leg, duna sad siyay igo sa iyang bulletproof vest," said Police Lt. Colonel Wilbert Parilla, deputy director for operations of Cebu City Police Office.

Police Director-General Debold Sinas who visited Police Regional Office (PRO)-7 yesterday identified Cereño as the primary gunner of the slain Police Senior Master Sergeant Maximino Macua Jr.

Macua was shot during an anti-drug operation last year of February in Barangay Mambaling.

Parilla said that when Cereño was first arrested for illegal possession of firearms and explosives, he was using another name.

"Later on, katong gibuhatan na nato ni sya og spot report nga nakalayas, diha na na-confirm through sa RID nga mao ni sya ang katong tawhana nga, suspect sa pagkamatay ni Macua, mao ni sya ang target nila," said Parilla.

"Gausab-usab man gud ni syag ngalan, bisan unsa nalang ni ngalan iyang dal-on, para dili ni sya ma-trace iyang previous records," he added.

On their investigation, Parilla said that Cereño has previous records for robbery under the jurisdiction of the CCPO Police Station 7.

"Naa ni syay daghan nga previous nga record sa robbery, dili lang diri sa Cebu City but also sa Province of Cebu, link ni sya sa mga robbery ug hold up, even sa Station 7 nga area kung diin ni sya na-neutralized, naa ni syay pending nga kaso nga robbery," said Parilla.

Aside from this, Cereño had also been involved in a robbery of a gasoline station in Naga City. — GMR (FREEMAN)
