One dead, one injured in ‘shootout’ with cops
CEBU, Philippines — A man was killed, while another one was injured after allegedly shooting it out with policemen Wednesday night in Sitio Landing, Barangay Catarman, Liloan town.
The fatality was identified by police as Florencio Almerez, 30. His companion, 22-year-old Aldrin Lucernas, was wounded in the firefight with the police officers.
A concerned citizen called the Liloan Municipal Police Station and reported about two armed men onboard a motorcycle roaming around the sitio.
Police Major Danilo Colipano said the suspects appeared to have been looking for someone.
A team of five policemen immediately went to the area after receiving a tip.
But the suspects allegedly started shooting at the approaching police officers.
The cops retaliated, killing Almerez and injuring Lucernas.
Colipano said the exchange of gunfire lasted for five minutes.
“The suspects fired at our policemen, prompting our men to retaliate,” he said.
Police only recovered one .45 caliber pistol from the suspects.
Colipano said the station is now looking into the motive of the suspects, who are reportedly residents of Danao City.
“We will still check if they are included in the drug watchlist or involved in any crime,” he said. — KQD (FREEMAN)
