Water coop blocksentry of MCWD in Kalunasan

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Langub Kalunasan Multi-Purpose Cooperative is dismayed by what it called a “monopoly” of the supply of water perpetrated by Metropolitan Cebu Water District.

LKMPC chairman, Engineer Antonio Canoy, has opposed the entry of MCWD in Barangay Kalunasan where the cooperative is operating a water system. Canoy aired his opposition during a public consultation conducted by the MCWD.

LKMPC is serving level-3 water to about 500 households, mostly employees and staff of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center and the Cebu City Jail. The cooperative is also serving level-1 water supply to several residents in the barangay.

Canoy also hit MCWD for imposing expensive fee to apply for water connection. Some residents, however, welcome the entry of MCWD to address the water problem in the area especially during dry season.

The entry of MCWD will compete with the LKMPC and other private suppliers in the area. Canoy said they are not threatened by the entry of MCWD in Kalunasan. He said they only want a fair competition.

MCWD general manager,  Engineer Ernie Delco, assured the residents of better services.

Delco said the 20-horse power water pump installed in Kalunasan is just temporary as they will put up a dam in Nivel Hills, Apas to supply enough water in uptown areas.

He also said the issue on monopoly raised by Canoy had already been resolved by the Supreme Court.  (FREEMAN)
