VECO reminds public anew to conserve energy

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Visayan Electric Company continues to advocate energy conservation to avoid a steep rise in power demand with the start of the summer season.

“As of this time, we don’t have a problem in our power supply and we want to keep it that way,” said Theresa Sederiosa, VECO spokesperson.

In line with their energy conservation advocacy, they suggested some steps like unplugging appliances (refrigerators, water dispensers, computers, microwave oven, television, electric fan) when not in use.

VECO also advised to unplug cellphone chargers when not in use as it continues to use power even without a cellphone charging.

Ironing of clothes should only be done once a week, the power company further advised.

In line with power conservation, VECO is monitoring the drop in demand of power during Earth Hour yesterday.

VECO noted that in 2012 they noted a power drop demand of 2,777.17 kwh and 11,015.87 kwh in 2013 during the one hour Earth hour shutdown.

Earlier, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-7 urged the public to join millions around the world in marking Earth Hour by switching off the lights for one hour  in support of a global campaign to combat climate change.

The Earth Hour is dubbed as the single, largest, symbolic mass participation event in the world, initiated by the Washington-based environmental group World Wildlife Fund for Nature.

The Philippines has consistently registered the most number of participating towns and cities, earning the distinction as an “Earth Hour Hero Country” since it first joined the event in 2009.

At present, there are more than 150 countries that actively observe Earth Hour every year.  (FREEMAN)
