City vets backs mandatory spaying, neutering for pets

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu City veterinarian Alice Utlang yesterday expressed optimism that the proposed ordinance of Cebu City councilor Ronald Cuenco requiring Cebu City residents to have their pets castrated will be passed into law.

Utlang, together with members of Humane Society International and Southwestern University students, recently went to conduct free dog and cat castration in Sitio San Miguel, Barangay Apas, Cebu City.

“Soon it will be released kay gipanday pa ang ordinance. Dili gyud unta moabot sa punto nga dunay ordinansahon nga mag-mandatory ang dog and cat spaying and neutering tungod ang problema daghang gihapon ang responsable nga pet owners kun makapaak wa nay moangkon ug unya kabahin pud ni sa pag-control sa dog population,” Utlang said.

The said proposal exempts dog breeders.

“Kinahanlang magparehistro sab ang mga dog owners nga nag-breeding sila para sa negosyo unya kinahanglan mobayad sab sila. I think makakuha ta og favorable kay especially sa barangay kinahanglang gyud kay ma control ang gidaghanon sa iro,” Utlang said.

The mandatory spaying and neutering will support the existing Cebu City Ordinance 2238 that requires dog owners to register and vaccinate their pets. Failure to comply will warrant a P2,000 fine. — (FREEMAN)
