Balikbayan, security guard hurt in separate stabbing incidents

CEBU, Philippines – A balikbayan and a security guard were injured in separate stabbing incidents in Cebu City over the weekend.

Personal grudge was said to have driven Patricio Velasquez, 49, to stab his elder brother Joel, 55, shortly after midnight Sunday in Sitio Candarong Barangay Pulangbato.   

The suspect is reportedly harboring ill-feelings towards his elder brother after he was told not to go back to the United States anymore because he is giving them trouble. Homicide investigators said, prior to the incident the victim was having a drinking session with his friends when the suspect arrived.

Patricio, who was reportedly drunk, went to his brother and stabbed him on the stomach without any provocation and soon after fled on foot towards Barangay Pitos. The victim was brought to the North General Hospital.

In another incident, security guard Erwin Cabasag, 24, was stabbed on his left chest by his neighbor Joey Cadayac in Sitio Kawayan, Poblacion Pardo Saturday evening. 

Cabasag, a guard at Alta Vista Golf Course in Talisay City, was attacked by the suspect while playing basketball at around 8:30 p.m.

Cabasag tried to chase the suspect even if he was already injured but failed to catch him. He was immediately brought to the Cebu City Medical Center for treatment.

Initial investigation conducted by the homicide section revealed that the suspect got mad at the victim because he was prevented from selling used golf balls. (FREEMAN)
