Lawmaker fires aide over program lapses

-

Cebu 4th District Representative Benhur Salimbangon has fired a member of his staff over lapses in the implementation of his scholarship program that resulted to confusion among the beneficiaries.

Salimbangon said the one in charge in implementing the program allegedly failed to disseminate the guidelines issued by the Commission on Higher Education, thus, there was overflowing of applicants last year and that several beneficiaries even enrolled in bachelors degree courses.

While he requested that the staff member’s name be withheld, congressman said he was forced to fire that employee because he already was getting all the blame and criticism despite him being in Congress when the program was being implemented.

Salimbangon apologized to the families of the scholars who were forced to shoulder the burden of the additional finances not covered by the scholarship.

Based on the guidelines issued by CHED, each of the 55 scholars in the fourth district would only receive P2,500 per semester. They must also possess grades that are above average.

In fact, Salimbangon said only those enrolled in vocational courses in training centers and institutions accredited by the Technical Educational Skills Development Authority can avail of the scholarship until they complete the required numbers of hours of trainings.

He also urged the beneficiaries to enroll in vocational courses such as welding, dress making, carpentry, and electronics because these courses require only a minimal length of time to complete, which would make it faster for them to apply for jobs.

Despite the unexpected confusion, Salimbangon said the program will continue. - Gregg M. Rubio/JMO (THE FREEMAN)
