Street sweeping for city litterbugs

-

The city government plans to teach people arrested for littering a lesson by having them sweep and clean the city roads on Saturdays.

City Environment Sanitation and Enforcement Team employee Geraldine Nudalo said since the city government launched on July 1, 2005 an intensified campaign against those who make the city streets dirty, the number of persons apprehended had already reached more than 25,000.

Of those apprehended, 4,398 of them chose to perform community service rather than face criminal charges before the courts for failing to pay the P500 fine.

Councilor Nestor Archival, chairman of the City Council committee on environment, was designated to head the CESET, whose members are tasked to apprehend the violators of the city’s anti-littering ordinance.

Nudalo reported to Archival that as of last Friday there were 25 persons scheduled to participate in the community service on August 25, but she expects more violators to be apprehended within the week.

The records showed that most of those apprehended for throwing garbage in public areas have decided to amicably settle their violations rather than pay more to settle their cases after they were charged in court.

Nudalo said the city has already collected P1,269,000 from the fines of those apprehended by the CESET personnel and volunteers for violating the provisions of City Ordinance 1361 and of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act or Republic Act 9003. — Rene U. Borromeo/BRP
