Ipong is new reg’l state prosecutor

-

The fuss over the looming appointment of assistant city prosecutor Mary Ann Castro to be the state prosecutor of Central Visayas was stopped yesterday when Justice Secretary Raul Gonzales named another woman for the post instead.

Gonzales ordered Llena Ipong to take the post starting August 1 as replacement of Antonio Arellano who was transferred to Davao City earlier for a similar position.

Not much yet was known about Ipong but she vowed to continue the programs, especially the monitoring of drug cases, which Arellano left behind.

The controversial Castro lately grabbed another spotlight of controversy when her name appeared the strong contender to replace Arellano as regional state prosecutor.

Castro was reported to have visited Wednesday the regional prosecutor’s office, and had even started planning on the office’s new arrangement as soon as she takes over.

This triggered agitated reactions from the lawyers in the region, objecting to Castro’s taking the top regional post.

They contended that the prosecutor’s involvement in some controversies in the past made her an unacceptable choice for the post.

They were already poised to go for a formal anti-Castro move at the DOJ but Secretary Gonzales was quicker to stop the onslaught of protests. — Fred P. Languido/RAE
