Style Origin: Where "Nomcore" is the Norm

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines -  Every now and then, we are reminded of how livid with constant variety the world of fashion is - a state that's easily exemplified by outstanding events and gatherings that put the spotlight on the diction and tenses set by the trendsetters of style.

Such an occasion happened in Cebu last week, in this year's final leg of Ayala Malls' Style Origin Series - where the creations of the country's sought-after designers seamlessly met with the fashion-forward collections proffered by a number of the country's well-loved local and international brands.

With runway presentations of sleek silhouettes and unexpected-but-effective pairings, vivid-yet-subtle patterns and monochromatic-but-explosive neutrals, this year's Style Origin managed to say something about how versatility and timelessness are well on their way in becoming the new kingmakers of style - as a sudden upswing in minimalism has taken over the current fashion scene's collective consciousness.

Colloquially dubbed as the "nomcore" trend, it stands to reason that toning down is now in season - but in no way does it mean that having fun with minimalism is out.

In the High Street Fashion show last Sunday, VIP attendees and the general audience were treated to a runway display of how cocktail chic, in-transit comfy, collegiate cool and leisurely casual are shaping up this season.

Cebuano personalities and top runway models of Manila and Cebu presented an eclectic selection of accessories and apparel by the mall's top fashion brands.

The occasion also featured the hottest "nomcore" picks of the country's fashion and style insiders - and highlighted the attendance of celebrity couple Drew and Iya Villania-Arellano, who were the show's co-hosts and guest performers.

Earlier on Saturday last week, the Mensweek Fashion Show was vivid with flair as Style Origin's "Mensweek Fashion Show" presented the menswear creations of the country's sought-after couturiers.

Focusing on how powdered neutrals, old school hits and raw cuts and sheens can lead to interesting fashionably cool ensembles, the show featured select pieces crafted by designers Roland Alzate, Jerome Ang, Edwin Ao, Ivar Aseron, Avel Bacudio, M. Barretto, Noel Crisostomo, Herbert Custodio, Chris Diaz, Regine Dulay, Rhett Eala, Joel Escober, Jaggy Glarino, Sassa Jimenez, Ulysses King, Jerome Lorico, Dennis Lustico, Johann Manas, Nixon Marquez, Willar Matteo, Tonichi Nocom, Norman Noriega, Renan Pacson, Bang Pineda, Proudrace, Yvonne Quisumbing, Anthony Ramirez, James Reyes, Philip Rodriguez, Jeffrey Rogador, Gian Romano, Bea Samson, Joey Samson, Cary Santiago, Don Sevilla, Ziggy Savella and Philipp Tampus.

The show also had celebrity guests Jeric Teng, Kris Lawrence and Sam Milby - whose fashionably cool aura didn't fail to impress.

Both shows were held at The Gallery of the Ayala Center Cebu's new expansion. (FREEMAN)
