Christmas contest winners

SPORTING CHANCE - Joaquin M. Henson - The Philippine Star

This year’s Christmas Contest brought in thousands of entries, more than ever before. The introduction of social media as a way to connect made it a lot easier for readers to send in entries which came from all over the country – Zamboanga, Palawan, Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija, Negros Oriental, Laguna, Batangas, Cavite, Guimaras and many, many more.

Unfortunately, several entries were disqualified because of wrong answers. The first question wasn’t difficult if you only googled Manny Pacquiao’s boxing record. The last fighter whom Pacquiao beat inside the distance was Miguel Cotto. A lot of entries put Ricky Hatton. One said Juan Manuel Marquez, another Tim Bradley and a far-off answer was Floyd Mayweather whom Pacquiao didn’t defeat.

The second question was easy, too. The first and only year when the Philippines hosted the FIBA World Cup, then known as the World Championships, was 1978. One entry had 2023 but that won’t happen until six years from now. Another entry saw it a trick question and answered never. The third question asked to name the three four-time PBA MVPs in history. One entry sneaked in Fortunato Co which was wrong. The three four-time MVPs are JuneMar Fajardo, Ramon Fernandez and Alvin Patrimonio.

At the moment, we’re still gathering the prizes to give to our 20 winners. Aside from the donations we acknowledged in our columns of last Dec. 7 and 14, recent additions were 20 pairs of Peak basketball sliders, 24 Rain Or Shine T-shirts and 24 Rain Or Shine umbrellas, 10 cases of Vita Coco from Rommie Chan of the Philippine Tennis Academy, gifts from Mike Barredo of the Philippine Paralympic Committee (2 water bottles, 2 sets-of-5 towels, 2 sets-of-4 towels, 3 water bottles) and Gatorade (5 towels, 4 T-shirts, 5 drinking bottles, 3 vacuum flasks).

Previous donations were received from ALA Boxing Gym, Planet Sports, The Philippine Star, Sonak Corp., Nike Philippines, Green Bulb Public Relations, SBP, PBA, San Miguel Corp., Larc and Asset, San Miguel Beer, Barangay Ginebra, Chooks To Go, Alaska, PLDT, Metro Pacific, Meralco, Ever Bilena, The Herma Group, GAB chairman Baham Mitra, GlobalPort and Kia.
