MANILA, Philippines — Defending champion Centro Escolar University and Diliman College scored contrasting wins yesterday to stay at the helm in the Universities and Colleges Basketball League (UCBL) Season 2 at the Olivarez College gym in Sucat, Parañaque City.

The CEU Scorpions atoned for their shock 56-59 loss to the Diliman Blue Dragons last Saturday as they trounced the University of Batangas Brahmans, 87-46.

Judel Fuentes led CEU’s assault, firing nine of his 17 points in the opening period while five others added at least eight points each for the Scorpions, who notched their seventh win against a loss.

“We really wanted to bounce back and I’m proud of how my players responded to the challenge,” said CEU coach Yong Garcia.

Earlier, the Diliman Blue Dragons drew another solid numbers from Senegalese Adama Diakhite as they outlasted the Bulacan State University Gold Gears, 79-70.

The 6-foot-9 Diakhite dominated the Gold Gears and finished with a triple-double of 18 points, 25 rebounds and 11 blocks while local guard Rickson Gerero shot a team-high 22 points.

Diliman’s win also extended its streak to five as it remained tied with CEU.

The Scorpions scored 30 points off turnovers and led by as many as 53 points.
