Rematch makes Horn a millionaire
MANILA, Philippines - Australian champion Jeff Horn felt relieved with the results of the WBO review but is now sounding like he’s the one dying for a rematch with Manny Pacquiao.
Horn becomes an instant millionaire if the rematch takes place.
If reports leading to the last fight were accurate, Horn was guaranteed $500,000, not including his share of the ticket sales.
In case of the rematch, the former schoolteacher will get $2 million.
“I feel like I’ve defended the title already and I’ve only had it for a week,” said the new WBO welterweight champion in an AFP report coming out of California.
Horn’s victory over Pacquiao at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane last July 2 was validated by the WBO upon a review and re-scoring of the fight by five anonymous judges, who had the 2012 Olympian winning the rounds, 7-5.
But there’s a rematch clause and this early, people are talking about a second meeting between the former schoolteacher from Brisbane and the senator from the Philippines.
Horn, who’s in Los Angeles for the ESPY Awards, is fanning the fire for a rematch.
“But people are always going to have their opinions and you’re not going to be able to change those. So I guess the only way you’re going to be able to do it is to have a rematch,” he said.
It’s like he’s daring and challenging Pacquiao for a rematch not later than the end of the year.
“And I think I would do better a second time,” said the 29-year-old Horn, who’s undefeated after 18 fights (17-0-1) as a professional.
Pacquiao has aired his intention to face Horn in a rematch but nothing is official as of now. His adviser, Michael Koncz, said the decision will come in the next few weeks.
Pacquiao was guaranteed $10 million for the “Battle of Brisbane,” and now the question is how much the fighter who’s been slowed down by age would get in the rematch.
The eight-division champion can either settle for the same amount or demand a slightly bigger paycheck or walk away.
Koncz said he’s been holding talks with “a real group” from the United Arab Emirates for a Pacquiao fight involving Amir Khan.
But that was before Pacquiao “lost” to Horn.
