Alas, Amer tapped as new Gilas pool members

MANILA, Philippines – National coach Chot Reyes named last night NLEX guard Kevin Alas and Meralco playmaker Baser Amer as the new additions to the Gilas national pool, taking over from Bradwyn Guinto and Jonathan Grey.

At the same time, Reyes announced the resumption of the Gilas training on June 20, two months before the start of the 2017 Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur.

Reyes made the announcements on his Twitter account.

Called up to attend are the Gilas cadets who may be joined in by amateur standouts Kobe Paras, Kiefer Ravena, Reymar Jose and Fil-German player Christian Standhardinger.

The memorandum of agreement between the PBA and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas allows Reyes to call the Gilas cadets to training 60 days before the start of an international competition.

The additional PBA veterans—one each from the 12 PBA ball clubs—join the training 15 days before a tourney. The list now includes Alas and Amer, both former Gilas cadets who have suited up with Team Phl in the SEABA Championship and in the SEAG during their amateur years.

Reyes tapped new players from NLEX and Meralco with the transfer of Guinto and Grey to GlobalPort through recent trade deals.

In a meeting with PBA commissioner Chito Narvasa and SBP president Al Panlilio, Reyes bared his plan to bringing the Gilas cadets to the SEAG while tapping a selection of PBA veterans to the tougher and more important FIBA Asia Cup—both in August.

PBA veterans who are likely to form the core of the Gilas team in the Asia Cup in Beirut, Lebanon are June Mar Fajardo, Japeth Aguilar, Calvin Abueva, Raymond Almazan, Terrence Romeo, Jayson Castro and Allein Maliksi.

Matthew Wright, RR Pogoy, Jio Jalalon, Mike Tolomia, Von Pessumal, Carl Bryan Cruz, Kevin Ferrer, Ed Daquioag, Alfonso Gotladera, Arnold Van Opstal and Almond Vosotros are the Gilas cadets.

Mac Belo and Russell Escoto are also in the Gilas cadet pool but they’re nursing injuries.

Standhardinger is a 6-foot-7 Fil-foreign forward playing in the German league.
