UAAP season�s best feted in awards rites

Cameroonian Mbala will officially become the first foreigner in 35 years to be named MVP in the awards rites set at 2 p.m. at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

MANILA, Philippines - The UAAP will honor the top individual performers in the basketball competitions led by Ben Mbala of La Salle and Afril Bernardino of National U as well as participants in international tournaments led by Olympians Ian Lariba of La Salle and Jessie Khing Lacuna of Ateneo in a ceremony before Game Two of the UAAP LXXIX hoops finals on Wednesday.

Cameroonian Mbala will officially become the first foreigner in 35 years to be named MVP in the awards rites set at 2 p.m. at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Mbala will be joined by teammate Jeron Teng, Raymar Jose of Far Eastern, Paul Desiderio of University of the Philippines and Thirdy Ravena of Ateneo in the Mythical 5. Aljun Melecio of DLSU will be adjudged Rookie of the Year.

Meanwhile, Bernardino will get her second consecutive MVP plum in the distaff side, where fellow NU stalwarts Jack Danielle Animan and Gemma Miranda, Snow Penaranda of La Salle, and Love Sto. Domingo of University of the East will be part of the Mythical 5.

DLSU graduate Lariba, the first Filipino table tennis player to qualify in the Olympics, and swimmer Lacuna, who made his second Olympics stint in the Rio Games, will share the spotlight with the basketball heroes and heroines.

Student-athletes who participated in the Asean University Games, including volleyball superstar Alyssa Valdez, will also be recognized.

Close to 100 individuals from swimming, table tennis, men’s and women’s volleyball, track and field, women’s basketball, and fencing will get their recognition for carrying the country’s colors in the Singapore AUG.
