Pinays repel Aussies in Asian U-19

Joey Villar - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines turned back Australia, 15-25, 25-21, 25-20, 23-25, 15-11, yesterday to nail its first win in the 18th Asian Women’s Under-19 Volleyball Championship in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

University of the East standout Mary Anne Mendrez and National U mainstay Jasmine Nabor atoned for their mediocre showing the first time out as they fired 18 hits apiece while combining for 30 attack points as the Nationals bounced back from a stinging 17-25, 14-25, 17-25 setback to the South Koreans.

The Phl, composed of the same team that finished fourth in a field of eight in the Princess Cup ASEAN Under-18 Championship in Sisaket, Thailand last week, will face Chinese Taipei today, looking for another win and a chance for the playoff round.

The Phl is in Pool D with South Korea, Chinese Taipei and Australia in the eight-day tournament, which drew 15 teams, including powerhouse, China (Pool B), Japan (Pool C) and Thailand (Pool A).
