Knights prime up vs Chiefs; NCAA takes quake drill break
MANILA, Philippines - Unbeaten Letran hopes to make full use of today’s break as it toughens up for a key duel with Arellano U in tomorrow’s resumption of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
The league takes a break to give way to the nationwide earthquake drill.
Having hurdled title contenders San Beda, Perpetual Help and Jose Rizal U, the Knights seek to topple the Chiefs, in solo third with a 4-1 mark, and stay on track for a possible sweep of the first round elims.
A victory over Arellano in their 4 p.m. duel will stretch Letran’s streak to six, leaving Mapua (2-3), Lyceum (1-4) and Emilio Aguinaldo College (0-5) as the Knights’ last three assignments for a dream sweep.
Letran posted its best start of 7-0 two years ago but coach Aldin Ayo is confident of pulling off a new feat.
“We are challenged because no one gave us a chance before the start of the season,” said Ayo, whose defensive style has worked wonders for the Knights, who have limited their five rivals to an average of 68.4 points.
Despite the Knights’ impressive start, Ayo considers his wards as underdogs.
“We haven’t accomplished yet and we can’t relax. We have to continue to play with desperation,” he said.
Expect the Chiefs to come into the match with the same mentality, not only to deal the Knights their first setback but also gain a piece of the lead.
San Beda tripped Perpetual Help in a thrilling finish, 83-81, to move to solo second with a 5-1 card while the Altas dropped to fourth with a 4-2 slate.
Meanwhile, Lyceum battles Mapua while San Sebastian tangles with Emilio Aguinaldo College in the other matches of tomorrow’s triplebill.
