Sa Youth Olympic Games unang gold ng Pinas pinana ni Moreno

NANJING - Inangkin ni archer Gabriel Luis Moreno ang gold medal para sa Pilipinas sa 2nd Youth Olympic Games.

Nakipagtambal si Moreno, No. 30 sa hanay ng 32 male archers, kay Chinese archer Li Jiaman, No. 3 sa women’s side, para sikwatin ang ginto sa mixed team event.

Sinabi ni Moreno, ang flag-bearer ng Philippine delegation sa YOG, na hindi niya inaasahang mananalo siya ng medalya sa event na nilahukan ng higit sa 3,000 atleta mula sa 202 Olympic nations.

“I didn’t expect to win anything here. I just gave my best,” wika ni Moreno, ang apo ni talk show host German Moreno.

Halos hindi mapasama si Moreno sa quarterfinals matapos umalis sa Fangshan Archery Field ka­sama ang kanyang pa­milya para magtanghalian makaraan ang morning session.

Nang magbalik sila sa venue ng alas-2:30 ng hapon ay oras na niya para tumudla.

“I was already crying inside the cab and my dad was panicking. Everybody had warmed up. So I just concentrated,” ani Moreno.

Ito ang unang gold me­dal ng bansa sa Youth Olympics para sa mga atle­tang may edad 14 hanggang 18-anyos.

Sa inaugural staging noong 2010 sa Singapore ay walang naiuwing medalya ang bansa.

“This is a big win for us coming from a third world country,” ani Moreno.

Sa finals ay tinalo nina Moreno at Jiaman sina Muhammad Zoklepeli ng Malaysia at Cynthia Freywald ng Germany, 6-0 (38-37, 38-35, 37-33).
