Pinoy jailed in Russia for shipmate’s slay
MANILA, Philippines – A team from the Philippine embassy in Moscow met with Russian officials to work out the release of a Filipino seafarer found guilty of killing his compatriot.
Embassy representatives traveled to the Amur region from Nov. 27 to 30 to visit the Filipino, who is serving his sentence at a penal colony in the area.
The killing occurred as the two Filipino seafarers were onboard their vessel, which was sailing within the territorial waters of Russia.
Embassy officer Christian Baggas and interpreter Dmitry Khodzko spoke to the Filipino, whose identity was withheld. They brought him food, clothing and several personal care items.
While at the penal colony, the embassy team met with their Russian counterparts to discuss the possible early release of the Filipino for showing good behavior while in detention, and the legal requirements for the process.
Baggas conveyed to the detainee messages from his relatives and committed to in turn convey his messages to them.
The embassy will continue to monitor and assist the Filipino and work for his early release.
