NAIA forced to close runway

Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines (Philippines News Agency) – The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Monday afternoon was forced to implement an emergency closure on one of its runways, airport authorities said in an advisory.

In a statement, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said the closure was due to a soft spot in main Runway 06/24 to avoid damage to aircraft.

MIAA said the closure was decided upon risk assessment made by airport authorities.

Because of the runway closure, there will be expected flight diversions until on or about 10 p.m. Monday since flights using aircraft A320 and below may use Runway 13/31 for flight operations.

At present, MIAA is determining the number of flights to be affected.

MIAA General Manager Eddie Villanueva Monreal is currently on site with MIAA Operations and Engineering Teams to see the extent of the damage.

The authority will meanwhile forego its regular runway cleaning usually done daily from 1:30 a.m. - 3:30 a.m. to cope with the expected influx of diverted flights.

Passengers were also urged to reach the following fight information numbers for flight updates:

Terminal 1 – 8771765

Terminal 2 – 877-1109 loc. 2882

Terminal 3 – 8777888 loc. 8144

Terminal 4 – 551-4119

Passengers could also reach the MIAA through SMS at 09178396242 or through the MIAA Twitter account @naia_miaa and Facebook page MiaaGovPH.
