DFA: No Filipinos hurt in Indonesia quake
MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Thursday said that no Filipinos were injured in the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that jolted Indonesia’s western region on Wednesday evening.
“So far we have not received any report of Filipinos affected by the earthquake in Indonesia,” DFA Spokesperson Charles Jose confirmed.
On Wednesday evening, a magnitude 7.8 hit Padang, West Sumatra. According to The U.S. Geological Service, it centered under the ocean at depth of 24 kilometers.
Due to the quake, tsunami warning was issued but was later on lifted.
There were no deaths and casualties reported during the tremor.
In 2004, a magnitude 9.1 quake also struck off the world’s largest archipelago, Indonesia, which resulted to the world’s deadliest tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries.
