Abu Sayyaf: Here we go again (Conclusion)

THAT DOES IT - Korina Sanchez -

Sen. Richard Gordon has already stressed that the ICRC does not pay ransom to terrorists, as it risks setting a precedent for others to follow. The pirates of Somalia, for instance, have seen the tremendous economic benefits of hijacking ships. And to think that the ICRC, like all other groups in Mindanao, are there to help the region.

There are two apparent ways to deal with the problems concerning the ASG. The obvious one would be to, finally, deal with them, harshly and permanently. To cure a cancer, you sometimes have to cut it out. The ASG is more than just a terrorist group, it is a gang of bandits, thieves, murderers. They have forfeited their rights in society. A campaign to totally eradicate them is possible, with the right leaders, the right commanders.

It is puzzling, at the least, that the abductors of anchor Ces Drilon and group have yet to be apprehended if not wiped out long after the same have been identified. One cannot help but suspect that those tasked to capture and jail the culprits are, themselves, beneficiaries of the crimes. How else could the authorities, local or national, allow this kidnap-for-ransom business alive for so long?

The other way might beto totally ban every organization from sending their personnel into known ASG operational territories. This move may be harsh on those who benefit from those who risk to help. But this is for their own safety, and the peace of mind of the visiting and host countries as well.

The Philippines has long since been known as one of the kidnap capitals of the world, especially the island of Mindanao. It is time to change that.

The people themselves have to rise up against the ASG — informing the authorities of their hideouts and movements, and not support them in any way. If this is achieved, then Mindanao will finally have the development and progress that it rightfully deserves, and for the country to benefit.
