Grammys 2022: Big wins for Fil-Am artists but not yet time for BTS

SOUNDS FAMILIAR - Baby A. Gil - The Philippine Star

The slap was the big news out of the recent Academy Awards. Not as controversial but also just as painful and globally resounding is the one out of the 64th Grammy Awards that was held last April 3. Just ask the members of those mourning ARMYs. And it is that BTS did not get the Grammy.

The South Korean boy group was nominated in just one category, the Best Pop/Duo or Group Performance for the single Butter. It was their second time. They also got one last year for Dynamite and also did not win. Hopefully, the boys will get another chance next year.

Now every nominee is hopeful of the win. But then BTS was up against formidable competition. Think Justin Bieber and benny blanco for Lonely; Coldplay for Higher Power; the revered duo of Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga for I Get a Kick Out of You and the winners, Doja Cat and SZA for Kiss Me More.

On the other hand, though, I say Pinoys rejoice! I know their passports say American but they have loads of Pinoy blood flowing in their veins. They are Bruno Mars with a Filipino mother and Olivia Rodrigo with a Filipino mother. They both emerged as big winners of the evening.

Record of the Year or Song of the Year would have been nice. But it is still a Grammy nomination.

Mars and Anderson .Paak share chores as frontmen of Silk Sonic, the pop R&B group with the sleekest sounds these days. They bagged Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Song for their debut single, Leave the Door Open. The R&B Performance was a tie with Jazmine Sullivan for Pick Up the Pieces.

Rodrigo, who was on her first time out at the Grammys, went home with the Best New Artist, Best Pop Solo Performance for driver’s license and Best Pop Vocal Album for her Sour. Add to this list H.E.R., who has a Filipino mother. She got the Best Traditional R&B Performance Grammy for Fight for You.

It was a bittersweet win for the Foo Fighters. The Dave Grohl-led band clinched the top prizes in the rock music category with Best Rock Performance for Making a Fire, Best Rock Song for Waiting on a War and Best Rock Album for Medicine at Midnight. Unfortunately, the group lost Taylor Hawkins, its charismatic drummer to a heart attack last March 25 while they were on tour in South America. Hawkins was 50 years old and had been beating the drums for the Foos for the past 25 years.

Questlove did it again. A few weeks ago, Ahmir Questlove Thompson of the band Roots won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for Summer of Soul (…Or When the Revolution Could Not be Televised) about the Harlem Cultural Festival held in 1969. He now has the Grammy for Best Music Movie for the same film.

Some of the other notable wins at the 64th Grammy Awards were:

• Album of the Year: We Are, Jon Batiste

• Traditional Pop Album: Love for Sale, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga

• Dance Electronic Recording: Alive, Rufus Du Sol

• Dance/Electronic Album: Subconsciously, Black Coffee

• Rap Performance: Family Ties, Baby Keem ft. Kendrick Lamar

• Rap Song: Jail, Kanye West ft. Jay-Z

• Rap Album: Call Me if You Get Lost, Tyler the Creator

• Melodic Rap: Hurricane, Kanye West ft. The Weeknd and Lil Baby

• Metal Rock Performance: The Alien, Dream Theater

• Roots/Gospel Album: My Savior, Carrie Underwood

• American Roots Performance: Cry, Jon Batiste

• Best Music Video: Freedom, Jon Batiste

And now a must for all Beatle lovers of the past 50 years or so. The winner of the Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package is the George Harrison classic, All Things Must Pass, the 50th Anniversary Edition.

Do check out the Grammy website for the rest of the winners.
