High five for Consolacion boxers

CEBU, Philippines — All five boxers of Consolacion who made it to the finals pocketed gold medals in the Cebu Provincial Meet 2024 held in the City of Naga, south of Cebu recently.

Brothers Jerald and James Ryan Villarubi spearheaded Consolacion’s five-gold sweep after emerging as champions in the Junior light flyweight and Junior flyweight categories, respectively.

Gian Castro produced gilt in the Junior pinweight class, while John Tantiado and Rodolfo Medalla delivered the other golds in the Youth flyweight and Youth bantamweight divisions.

Under the guidance of coaches Mariz Pestañas and Gerbie Judaya, they are all products of the highly successful grassroots program of Consolacion’s Sarok Boxing Gym.

Their head trainer is Olipio Balunan, the father of undefeated World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia Pacific Youth minimumweight champion Christian Balunan (10-0, 6KOs).

The Consolacionanon pugs will next brace for a tougher challenge as they represent Cebu Province in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) Meet this May in Cebu City. – EBV
