Kid’s Athletic Practitioners Training Workshop set this weekend

CEBU, Philippines —  Athletics practitioners as well as the young aspiring athletes in Cebu will have a golden opportunity to learn more about their craft through the Kid’s Athletics Practitioners Training Workshop slated on December 9-10 at the University of Cebu-Maritime Education and Training Center (UC-METC) along Alumnos Street, Cebu City.

For the coaches, it is one of the most effective ways to improve their ability to mentor young athletes in basic running, jumping, and throwing.

“Cebu was chosen as the venue for the Visayas and the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) is thrilled to partner with Atty. Al Agra and the 5 Throws-for-All movement in this endeavor,” said CCSC chairman John Pages.

The 5 Throws-For-All is a program which aims to build better throwers and to expand the throwing community. It envisions a broad base of throwers all over the country who are skilled and competes in shot put, discus throw, javelin throw, hammer throw and weight throw.

Ma. Jeanette Obiena, mother of world champion pole-vaulter EJ Obiena, will serve as the mentor and teacher  of this weekend’s program. She is one of the only two Masters Mentors in Asia duly accredited by the World Athletics.

Among the topics that will be discussed by Obiena include the Introduction to kids’ athletics, importance of warm-up, adapting activities using the STEP (Space, Task, Equipment, and People), and development of fundamentals of movement skills.

She will also take up the development of athletics movement skills (running, jumping, and throwing), how to plan a kids’ athletics session, and risk assessment and safeguarding.

“We will have 31 participants and over 60 children joining,” said Pages. “We also thank the school owner Atty. Gus Go and UC athletic director Jessica Honoridez for opening up the UC-METC as the venue.”

Those who will take part in the two-day undertaking will receive a certificate of completion while the kids will receive a certificate of participation, an event official shirt, and loot bags from Milo. – EBV
