CEBU, Philippines —  Cebuana chess player Marphine Faith Mangubat will compete in what is by far the biggest stage of her budding career through the FIDE Online Rapid World Cadets and Youth Chess Championships scheduled to be held on August 1-31.

Mangubat earned the right to form part of the Philippine team in the month-long virtual tilt, which will be participated in by young pawnpushers aged 10 to 18 years old all over the world, for being one of the top grand finalists during the National Age Group Chess Championships.

"I feel so happy that I am able to be part of this tournament. I am so grateful for this opportunity. I'll do my best in this tournament," Mangubat said.

Among her many shining credentials, Mangubat made it to the quarterfinals in the rapid chess event of the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games hosted by the country back in 2019.

The 18-year-old student of Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma is also the top lady player of the Cebu City Machers seeing action in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP), the country's first ever pro chess league. — EBV
