Caitom vows KO victory in WBC Asia title fight

Emmanuel B. Villaruel - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The resurgent Cebuano boxer Rey “The Future” Caitom Jr. got what is by far the biggest break in his world title bid as he slugs it out with Ellias Ngenggo of Indonesia for the World Boxing Council (WBC) Asian Boxing Council minimumweight belt on September 28 at the Juggernaut Fight Club in Singapore.

Caitom, now under the aegis of Arvind Lalwani of the Singapore Fighting Championship, minced no words against Ngenggo, saying that he is going for no less than a knockout victory against his Indon adversary.

“I can assure that there will be a knockout in this fight and I’m going to win,” said the pride of Mandaue City who is now based in the Lion City where he works as a trainer at the Unbeatable Boxing and Fitness Training gym.

Caitom will go all-out for the win as it will ensure him of landing at the top 15 in the world rankings, something that he is yearning for in pursuit of his world championship dreams.

The 33-year-old Caitom, however, admitted that he must be extra careful against the unpredictable Ngenggo.

The Indon may have lost his last six bouts via stoppage but he is capable of pulling off a stunner just like when he scored a fourth round stoppage of former world champion Merlito ‘Tiger’ Sabillo on November 15, 2014 at the Waterfront-Cebu City Hotel and Casino.

Sabillo is Caitom’s stablemate when he was still with the fabled ALA Gym.

“He’s a veteran and a very tough fighter. He even knocked out Merlito Sabillo,” said Caitom. “He’s also a very good counter puncher. But I will make the necessary adjustments in whatever he will bring to our match. Right now, I’m very focused on my training especially on my conditioning and improving my power.”

This marks for the third time that Caitom, a six-time national amateur boxing titlist, will climb up the ring since he returned from a  13-year hiatus.

On November 23 last year, Caitom defeated Silem Serang of Indonesia by unanimous decision at The Ring Boxing Community in Singapore.

Last June 29, Caitom came out fiercer and sharper to register a masterful second round TKO of Khachonsak Pothong of Thailand to stretch his unbeaten record to 8-0-1 spiked with 3KOs.
