CEBU, Philippines — The University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters pocketed 15 gold medals more to virtually seal the overall championship in the secondary division of the 27th Cebu City Olympics mainly at the Cebu City Sports Center.

Heading into the final day of the week-long competition that serves as the qualifying round for the city's representatives to the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) Meet next year, the Webmasters are already beyond reach with 49 golds, 38 silvers and 33 bronzes.

The University of San Carlos (USC) is a far second with 30-30-33 gold-silver-bronze tally followed by the University of the Visayas (UV) with 19 gold, 12 silver and nine bronze medals. 

In the last day of athletics competition, UC bagged three golds courtesy of Jhuvan Jehn Baculot in the triple jump with a leap of 10.87 meters and Mart Chan Torregosa in the 400m run with a time of 55.43 seconds.

UC’s sprinters also stunned the University of San Carlos (USC) for the 4x400m relay gold.

USC though reigned supreme in athletics with a total of 15 golds, 10 silvers and 12 bronzes followed by UC with an 11-14-8 haul.

In table tennis, UC swept all four golds at stake courtesy of  Eljey Dan Tormis and Krizzia Lauren Acaylar, while its arnis team delivered eight gilts spearheaded by Kenjie Alone and Marco Fulgencio with two golds each.

The other UC gold medallists in arnis were Shane Ericka Fua and Anthony Cris Luna.

On the other hand,  UV took the secondary boys basketball championship via an 87-76 whacking of UC. The gold in the distaff side went to Abellana National School (ANS) after it whipped Apas NHS, 54-42.

ANS also ruled the girls 3-on-3 hoop over Unit 2’s Quiot, 16-12, while the boys side saw the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) prevailing over USC, 18-15.

In elementary basketball,  Don Bosco Technical College stole the show after it outsmarted UV, 58-42.

In football, the Bosconians scored a twinkill agains Paref Springdale, while  St. Theresa’s College (STC) claimed the futsal gold after edging the University of San Jose-Recoletos, 6-1.

In the elementary standings, Unit 5 powered by UC, USC and City Central School also enters the threshold of the overall championship with an unassailable medal haul of 44 golds, 38 silvers and 26 bronzes.

Unit VII is a distant second with a 27-22-11 g-s-b tally, while Unit 2 is at third spot with a 14-2-6 medal count. (FREEMAN)
