CEBU, Philippines — The Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) is planning to construct the Regional Fish Port in Central Visayas in Cebu.

PFDA general manager, Atty. Glen Pangapalan, made the proposal to Governor Gwendolyn Garcia during their July 6 meeting at the Capitol.

Cebu is the target area of construction since it is the center of economy in Central Visayas

"It's a growth center area and the economy is very robust and kinahanglan pud nato matabangan ang atong fisherfolks hilabina gyud ang gagmay, the municipal, the commercial and the aquaculture sector," Pangapalan said.

Garcia, for her part, said the Capitol supports this plan and even suggested that the regional port must be in a strategic place in Cebu that is also accessible to fishing vessels from neighboring provinces in Central Visayas like Bohol, Siquijor and Negros Oriental.

An estimated eight hectares are needed for the construction of the regional port wherein the Capitol and the PFDA will work together to identify the area and implement the said project

"We need to come up with TWG (technical working group) in collaboration with DA and BFAR so that we can pick the most ideal area," Garcia said.

PFDA is an attached agency of the Department of Agriculture pushing for the said project as one of the priorities of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.  —  (FREEMAN)
