Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  Cebu City Councilor Donaldo “Dondon” Hontiveros, chairman of the city council’s youth commission, tells visiting youth leaders from Catarman, Samar to be resourceful and maximize all opportunities given to them to become effective young leaders.

Hontiveros said youth leaders must be equipped with the skill to maximize all available resources and utilize whatever is available to serve the community effectively.

Hontiveros, as chairman of the Cebu City Youth Development Commission, saw how the youth leaders in the city were able to help amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

He added that youth leaders learned to tap into different non-government agencies in the city to deliver basic services to their sector.

“Through the leadership of Councilor Jessica Resch, we were able to provide financial assistance to our students and gave (computer) tablets to those who are in need especially during sa online classes…because of our partnerships with the different NGOs,” said Hontiveros, as he gives due credit to Resch and the rest of her team for their valuable efforts.

Resch is the city’s Sangguniang Kabataan Federation president and sits as an ex-officio member of the City Council.

Aside from that, Hontiveros also said the youth sector also made efforts in helping in the vaccination campaign drive to achieve herd immunity.

“The youth sector was able to help also in our campaign for the vaccination kasi they helped convince the other sectors na magpabakuna (through) their activities and programs,” Hontiveros added.

Hontiveros also showed the visitors the video presentation of Mayor Mike Rama’s plan for a “Singapore-Like” Cebu City, hoping that it would also inspire the visitors to likewise create programs that would empower their youth. — GAN (FREEMAN)
