Patterned after random acts of kindness: Danao hails cop’s good deeds

CEBU, Philippines — Moved by a call of duty and sense of dedication, a police officer taking a day-off from a busy week of checkpoints, operations and other tactical cop duties risked the safety of his family to go after illegal drug suspects.

Last September 11, Police Officer 2 Renato Villabrile was out jogging in Barangay Looc, Danao City, together with his wife and his nine-year-old child.

In an exclusive interview with The FREEMAN, he narrated that three persons on board a motorcycle arrived at a crossing and stopped by a place considered as a hotspot where individuals engage in a pot session.

He said that without second thoughts, he left his family’s side and went after the three suspects.

This resulted to the arrest of the two, since the third one was able to run off quickly.

Danao Police Station Chief Gerard Pelare, upon learning of the incident, immediately hailed Villabrile as the Police Non-Commissioned Officer (PNCO) of the Week.

PNCO of the Week is weekly tribute to recognize the efforts of police officers in Danao City police station that Pelare had initiated.

Every week, Pelare will select the best performing policeman based on their good deeds or the impact of the actions to the community.

With the program as a catalyst of change, police are obliged to perform their best which subsequently leads to a better community service.

Villabrile said that as for his nine years of service as a police officer, it is his duty to go after lawless elements round the clock.

He said that despite reports of transgressing cops nationwide, he hoped that little acts of kindness will at least change the public’s perception towards the police force.

“Ang pulis kinahanglan kasaligan sa katawhan, tarong og tiunay nga moserbisyo,” Villabrile said.

Superintendent Jaime Quicho, Deputy Provincial Director for Administration and designated Officer-In Charge while the Provincial Director Senior Superintendent Edgar Allan Okubo is out of the country, said that what the Danao City Police Office is currently putting in place as a weekly recognition is one of the best practices that other police stations can emulate, to boost the morale of their policemen.

He said that this is anchored on the Random Acts of Kindness paradigm where policemen are first obligated to do three good deeds, until it such time that it is imbued to their system and becomes a habit.

Quicho said that this will develop a competent and highly-motivated police officer.

“Ang epekto nun, if we acknowledge and recognize their efforts sa pamamagitan ng pagbibigay ng awards and incentives, their morale will be boosted and mas lalo na silang sisipagin na magtrabaho pa,” Quicho said.

He continued that cops that are recognized for good deed will also help boost their efficacy and effectiveness in their respective roles and units.

“They are trying to magnify the little things that our police are doing on the ground,” Quicho said.

Aside from that, the program will help cultivate public trust and regain what was lost due to reported number of cops committing crimes.

“Hindi naman makakaila na some of our men ay medyo deflecting from what is right.  Pero alam naman natin yan.  Although, may masamang mga pulis, mas marami naman ang gumagawa talaga ng mabuti,” Quicho said. —/GAN (FREEMAN)
