Arrested man admits he decapitated victim

CEBU, Philippines - Police arrested yesterday the man allegedly behind the brutal killing in Sitio Makatol, Barangay Biga, Toledo City last week where the body of a man who was decapitated and castrated was found.

Glen Versaga, a 21-year-old farmer, was apprehended by the police along Fuente Osmeña, Cebu City early yesterday dawn following the information given by Barangay Biga captain Jonathan Sepada.

Alony Olasiman, a native of Carmen, Tuburan, was found dead with his head and genitals mutilated. Last Thursday, his head and his ID were recovered a few meters from where his body was found. His genitals have yet to be found.

Niña Mae Aban, the cousin of Versaga, serves as a witness to the crime after her cousin reportedly confessed to her that he was behind the death of Olasiman.

Aban said that Versaga confessed to her last Tuesday that he was the one who killed Olasiman and threatened her to keep it as a secret or else he will kill her and her family.

“Nag-joke-joke ra mi og estorya then naabot sa time nag-ask ko if apil ba siya sa pagpatay kay daghan na man gaduda na siya. Niingon siya nga basta mosulti ko, patyon ko niya. Kun di ko niya makuha, pamilya nako iyang kuhaon,” she said.

She added that since that day, she could not sleep anymore so she reported to the police.

Toledo City Police Station chief Superintendent Ricky Delelis said that after the discovery of Olasiman’s head, they focused on the Aban’s testimony so they could conduct a follow-up investigation.

“Yung sinabi ng suspek sa kanyang pinsan magkatugma sa pagka-recover natin sa ulo at ID ng biktima,” he said.

Versaga reportedly told the police after he was arrested that Olasiman threatened him that he will break his head prior the killing. When they met last November 2, Versaga who was under the influence of liquor, first stabbed the victim.

“Medyo nakainom daw siya. Hindi maalis sa kanyang isip ang threat na yun kaya inunahan na niya,” Delelis said.

Versaga admitted to the local media that he killed Olasiman.

“Nagkasugat mi unya akong giduslak ug gibangkaw nako siya. Giputlan sa liog ug gilubong sa sapa,” he narrated.

He said he never knew why the victim threatened him.

“Ako na lang dawaton tanan. Akong serbisyohan akong mga sala. Pero wa ko kahibawo kun unsa’y sala nako niya,” he said.

Versaga also confessed that he was the only one who committed the crime and further revealed that he also killed a male co-worker before in Junquera but could not remember anymore the date of the said killing.

Delelis said that they have to check on the previous case and determine if he already has a warrant of arrest.

Further, Delelis said that they are going to analyze the crime scene despite the admission of the suspect that  the motive behind the murder was personal grudge. “We will not stop digging,” he said.

He added they will also look into the possibility that Versaga had cohorts when he killed Olasiman. He will also advise the policemen, in coordination with the barangay tanods, to search for the weapon used by Versaga.

Cebu Provincial Police Office director Senior Superintendent Noel Gillamac commended Delelis and Sepada for the early resolution of the killing of Olasiman.

But Gillamac added that they should come up with a case to build-up based on the forensic evidences and the affidavits of the barangay captain, barangay tanods and policemen who conducted the follow-up investigation.

“As much as possible we will not rely on the extra-judicial confession of the suspect and the witness who is related to the suspect. For now, medyo di pa ta contented sa gisulti sa suspek sa atoa but we will continue the investigation,” he said.

Delelis said that they will file a murder case against Versaga as soon as possible. — Grace Melanie I. Lacamiento /ATO (FREEMAN)
